Rich Palmer had been a long-time patient at Riverview Health, but it wasn’t until he and his wife were involved in a serious car accident on Highway 31 that he truly understood the depth of care Riverview provides. What followed was an 18-month journey of healing which highlighted the dedication and expertise of the Riverview Health team.
“My wife had whiplash and was scheduled for x-rays and MRIs with follow-up from other doctors to discuss further care,” Rich shared. “I was more seriously injured, from a swollen foot and ankle to complications with a previous total knee replacement, a broken rib, a re-injury to an old torn rotator cuff, and even a loosened upper molar.”
Rich’s path to recovery began with good news. Riverview Health orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrew Malin confirmed his knee replacement remained intact, sparing him from another surgery. A local podiatrist provided further relief, assuring him his foot and ankle would heal with rest, ice, and elevation.
For his shoulder, Dr. Kyle Stephenson, another member of Riverview Health’s orthopedic surgery team, provided a total reverse shoulder repair. “It’s better now than before,” Rich stated. “That’s the type of surgeon you want to have: one that listens, works with you, supports you, and gets the job done right.”
While Rich praises his doctors, he was quick to point out great care goes beyond the operating room. “Each of these physicians has an incredible team behind them—PAs, nurses, office staff—all of them outstanding and compassionate. Once you’re part of the Riverview system, you’re treated like family,” he said. “To everyone who played a role in helping my wife and me through this, thank you. We are truly grateful.”
Rich also noted the seamless experience behind the scenes. “Throughout our entire recovery, not one mistake was made. Appointments were handled perfectly; insurance claims were processed without issue, and billing was accurate,” Rich noted. “Those working behind the scenes, crossing T’s and dotting I’s, deserve credit for making sure everything runs smoothly and supporting the frontline caregivers.”
When asked if he would recommend Riverview Health to others, Rich’s answer was simple: “Absolutely.”
